Winter Tires, Great Weather, and My Procrastination
Long story short: I haven’t changed to winter tires yet. Last year, a law was passed in Germany, specifically in December 4, 2010. Drivers of motorbikes and cars are required to have fitted winter tires when driving in icy, snowy or slushy conditions.
That’s the thing! The weather has been so warm. It snowed a couple of days, but the rain fell and washed it all away. Not to jinx it, but it’s been a mild and almost snowless winter.
So what’s the big deal with winter tires? They are expensive and for those who fail to have them. Drivers without them are subject to be fined of 40 Euros and 1 point on their license. This can go up to 80 Euros and 1 point if they cause an obstruction to traffic.
Plus, sad to say that insurance companies may not cover the damage caused by any accident if you fail to have winter tires.
So…Why am I procrastinating? I have all-season tires. See, you can still drive without winter tires, provided that there are no slushy, icy or snowy conditions. It is also required that you have clear visibility all the time. It is necessary that your windshield wiper system have anti-freeze.
Note: There are tires that will be considered winter tires if they are marked with “M+S”, or has either mountain or snowflake pictogram. You can see pictures of these tires online.
What do we need to know about winter tires? There are advantages as well as disadvantages to consider before deciding on the kind of tires to use.
Advantages of Winter Tires:
They are inexpensive not including shipping. They are installed easily and includes specified installation instructions. The winter tire packages online have affordable options which make it easier for your budget.
They have better grip. Winter tires are made specifically with better grip in snowy conditions and the rubber is very soft and tight. It has a bolt-on traction which helps when you live in a place where winter is very harsh. This is something you must have because all season type of tires will simply not cut the snow.
They have superior braking. Unlike the all-season tires, the winter tires will dig into the thick ice/snow and you will be able to use the superior brake efficiently when needed.
Here are the disadvantages:
They are tough on the roads. Winter tires are known for better grip but they are also tough and harsh on the roads. This is because they have studs that cause them to dig into the asphalt. It is best not to use these tires all year round, as they will ruin and tear up the road you drive them on. Blame these guys for the potholes.
They offer less precise handling. Because of the way these tires are built, they don’t handle very well. This means that you will need to be careful when driving, because you will not have full control of the vehicle compared to the normal weather condition.
They are relatively fragile. Since winter tires are made with softer rubber, they usually wear down fast unlike the all-season tires that are sturdier.
So, understand my procrastination?
