I Heart (With A Crack) Sing Off

One of the worst parts about being overseas is that you watch a show days and sometimes weeks after it has originally aired. I have to admit that I haven’t been picky with my entertainment over the past few months. In fact, I have gotten sucked into the mindless tasteless world of reality TV and video games. I decided to change it up and followed a show that’s  not mindless and tasteless, but definitely addicting if you are even slightly passionate about music. It’s called The Sing Off.

Week after week I have been amazed, dazed, and confused. This is why I must express my disgust, disapointment and outrage with The Sing Off judges Sara B and Ben Folds.

Who admits to possibly confusing a group with personally delivered guidance, commend their performance and technical expertise, and then penalize them in the end for adjusting to what the judges want and what is true to the group? What messages are they trying to send?

From what I can gather, I have learned this:

  • Even the most cheesy cabaret performance is worthy of winning as long as it is consistent.
  • A recording contract is on the line but the marketability of the group is not important.
  • Emotional connections with your audience are best expressed through theatrics and buffoonery.

I felt the same anger when the Mormon group from Utah was sent home because they were too consistent. Maybe they needed to go home since I can only remember them as the Mormon group from Utah instead of by their group name. That is beside the point.

Lets be for real for a sec. The Aires is a group that I would love to see on my way to the Lobster buffet in Las Vegas (Fifteen Dollar corner table at best).

When I listen to Afro Blue, I remember how well they came across the television. I remember rewinding their performances over, and over again. Yes, I dished out the $1.99 for a song download. Why? I can listen to them on my way to work, while I’m cleaning the house, and when I’m stretching for my work out. There is only one other group that I would give that type of attention to. That is Pentatonix. Let’s see if the judges give these guys the boot.

I’m ending this rant with this:

These poor judges made a decision based on consistency, yet I doubt either of them understands the flexibility of the word. If consistency is key, these judges would realize that their actions were not consistent with the critiques and commendations that each of them has extended to Afro Blue.

Rant Complete.
